Program Description:

SIT Study Abroad Serbia: Transitional Justice, Human Rights & Memory Activism Internship (Summer)

Explore justice, human rights, and memory in post-conflict societies and contribute to the work of an important organization with a meaningful internship.

Overview
This internship and seminar program invites you to explore transitional justice, human rights, and memory studies in post-conflict societies. You will first attend a series of lectures introducing the sociopolitical and historical context of the Balkans in recent decades, including the break-up of Yugoslavia, the wars of the 1990s, and post-war processes of transition as related to peacebuilding and social change. You will be introduced to the work of local civil society actors including those focused on memory activism, human rights, and other forms of engaged citizenship. Following this introduction, you will be matched with a local organization and mentor to complete your internship.

KEY TOPICS OF STUDY

  • Examine justice, memory, and human rights in Serbia and the Western Balkans
  • Explore civil society in South East Europe and the successor states of the former Yugoslavia
  • Consider the ethical implications and consequences of interning in another culture
  • Describe and analyze your internship experience through a final paper and oral presentation
 

MONEY MATTERS

Be sure to discuss how study abroad costs are handled at your school with your study abroad advisor.  

SIT tuition and room and board fees include the following:
  • Cost of all lecturers who provide instruction to students
  • Language instruction in Serbian
  • Educational excursions to locations such as Novi Sad
  • Internship
  • Accident and Illness insurance throughout the entire program period
  • All accommodations during the entire program period. This includes during orientation, time in the program base (Belgrade), on all excursions, during the Independent Study Project or internship, and during the final evaluation period.
  • Eight-week homestay in Belgrade
  • All meals for the entire program period. Meals are covered by SIT Study Abroad directly, through a stipend, or through the homestay.
 

SCHOLARSHIPS

  • SIT awards nearly $1.6 million in scholarships and grants annually.
  • All scholarships and grants are need-based.
  • Awards generally range from $500 to $3,000 for summer programs.  
  • Contact the financial aid and/or study abroad office(s) at your college or university to learn if your school’s scholarships and grants and federal and state aid programs can be applied to an SIT Study Abroad program.
